Data Driven EnviroLab is a research lab at the University of North Carolina at ChapelHill turning complex environmental data into actionable policy. The central concept behind this identity is the transformation of messy, complex datasets into clear, actionable insights—but always with people at the center. We developed a collage-based visual system that layers abstract and concrete elements. Satellite imagery sits alongside hands reaching toward each other. Circuit board patterns mix with human and natural elements. These juxtapositions illustrate the work of the lab: bridging the technical and the human. The lab's research often focuses on cities and urban environments, so we created a catalog of abstract geometric shapes based on cities they study—pixelated forms that reference both data visualization and urban geography. The color palette builds on their previous identity but pushes it further: dark teal, electric green, and warm beige evoke environmental data while signaling innovation. The flared serif typeface (GT Ultra) adds warmth and optimism while maintaining academic gravitas. Beyond static brand elements, this identity works as a flexible system across reports, presentations, social media, and the website. Whether illustrating climate policy or showcasing research findings, the system maintains its core message: rigorous data analysis in service of human and environmental wellbeing.
